The Sensory Garden Design

The Sensory Garden, nestled within the Ballinlough Community Garden, is designed as a tranquil oasis where people can reconnect with nature and feel a sense of belonging. Established in 2022, this serene environment encourages relaxation and provides a multitude of sensory experiences through carefully selected plants and features.

The Brief

The Sensory Garden within the Ballinlough Community Garden was completed in April 2023. Carol, along with her client, imagined this garden design would become a community space dedicated to promoting calmness, relaxation, and a sense of belonging. Indeed it has become just that: a source of tranquility for locals and visitors to the area alike.

There is no hard landscaping in this garden design- organic shapes and using what resources the community group had, is evidence of what can be achieved through thoughtful design.

    Features of the Sensory Garden

This unique garden incorporates a variety of sensory elements to engage all five senses, enhancing the experience of every visitor. People are invited to immerse themselves in this peaceful environment, making it a perfect spot for individual reflection or group activities that encourage connection to nature, or just have some fun! Good garden design can achieve far more than simple aesthetics.

    Ecological Horticulture

This garden has become more than just a collection of plants; it is a community resource that promotes education and engagement with horticultural and ecological practices. There is an open invitation to local residents and schools to participate, it fosters an understanding of sustainable gardening methods, encouraging a deeper connection between individuals and nature.

By managing the garden with an ecological horticulture perspective, the project not only provides beauty and utility but also contributes to environmental stewardship in the community. Hence, this garden design was all about plants!

    What my client said...

Carol was a pleasure to deal with. She designed our Sensory Garden area with great care & attention to detail. She listened to our brief & understood exactly what we were looking for to fit within our budget. We wanted plants that would appeal to all the senses, be colourful & add year round interest. The addition of the limestone stepping stones Carol added was a lovely reflection on the history of the local quarry here in Ballinlough. The plants Carol chose are very low maintenance while also being very beneficial to pollinators which is part of our mission in Ballinlough Tidy Towns - to increase biodiversity in our community. We would highly recommend Carol to any private garden owner or community group looking for a great garden design.    Clare O'Driscoll, Ballinlough Residents Association
