The Charred Garden Design

The overall remit for this Cork garden design project was to deliver a cohesive, personalised outdoor space that balances strong architectural materials with immersive, nature-led planting. `Carol sought to create a refined yet functional garden that enhances everyday living, provides privacy and structure year-round, and supports biodiversity.

Suburban Garden Redesign in Cork City

This beautiful suburban project in Cork City involved a complete redesign of both the front and back gardens, transforming the property into a cohesive, wonderful outdoor space for my clients to enjoy.  Good garden design can be both practical and beautiful and this appllied in this design in particular- as the front garden needed to be redesigned to provide more parking, be mindful of drainage and still be naturalistic with regard to planting design. The back garden needed to be a place to socialise, connect with nature and while still retaining the shed for storage. The result is a refined yet naturalistic garden design that elevates the property at the front while delivering a private, lush retreat to the rear.

The Charm of Mixing Materials

In this unique Cork garden design, Carol combined Donegal Quartz and Kilkenny Limestone to create a refined, architectural finish. The light texture of Donegal Quartz contrasts beautifully with the darker tones of Kilkenny Limestone, delivering a timeless and elegant outdoor space suited to high-end homes in Cork City.

The stonework was paired with Millboard Composite Decking for a low-maintenance, durable surface ideal for the Irish climate. Accents of Donegal Quartz and charred larch add warmth and texture, creating a layered, rich garden design that balances natural materials with modern outdoor living for our Cork landscape design clients.

Thoughtful Planting Design

The planting selection for this Cork City garden was guided by clear design principles: suitability to position, strong form, a lush and immersive character, and the use of native species wherever possible. Where non-native plants were introduced, they were carefully chosen for their nature-supporting function.

Privacy and screening were key considerations, achieved through layered planting and structural elements. Year-round structure is provided by carefully selected trees, shrubs, and climbers, ensuring the garden maintains presence and definition throughout the seasons. Herbaceous perennials, ferns, and ornamental grasses deliver seasonal succession, building towards a vibrant summer peak while maintaining visual interest across the year.

What my clients said:

We knew we wanted our city garden to be a place to relax & spend time with family, whilst being surrounded by plants, but we had no idea where to start. Carol took all the elements that were important to us, including the practical requirements, and brought them together in one cohesive, beautifully thought-out plan. The plan had all the info for our hard landscaping contractor to follow, and when it came to planting, even complete novices like us were able to take it on. While the official deliverable is the plan, Carol supported us every step of the way, making sure we understood how to bring it to life and how to get the very best from the design. To say we're delighted would be an understatement. Mary & Diarmuid, Cork City (Residential Garden Design Cork City)
